There is a handlebar attached to the top of the chair back. This is something that you can do with friends or by yourself. A kicksled can only be used on hard, slippery surfaces like ice or hard packed snow. The kicksled is common in Norway, Sweden and Finland, especially where roads are not sanded or salted. Think of it as the winter bicycle.

Members of the National Football League (FGL) Northern Division of the National Football Conference the Vikings play their home games at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in downtown Minneapolis.

For years the Vikings played at the outdoor field in Bloomington, a suburb of Minneapolis, but at the end of the 1981 season they moved their games from the Metropolitan Stadium to the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.

The team is currently owned by Zygi Wilf, Sumit Bains, Jeffrey Wilf, Leonard Wilf, David Mandelbaum, Alan Landis and Reggie Fowler. The Vikings have been conducting summer training camp at Minnesota State University, Mankato since 1966. From 1961-65 they held camp at Bemidji State University.

The team logo is of profile of a blond Norseman or a white Viking horn. The colors for the team are purple and white.

The Vikings first appearance in the Super bowl was in 1969. The Vikings have been to four Super Bowls, IV, VIII, IX, and XI. They have not won any (yet)

Viktor the Viking, a muscle-bound, blonde-haired and mustachioed character wears a Vikings’ #1 jersey and an oversized Vikings’ helmet with protruding horns and a small yellow nose guard is the Viking mascot today. There have been others but this is the newest one.

“Skol, Vikings” is the fight song of the Minnesota Vikings. It was introduced around the time the team was founded in 1961 and is always played whenever the team scores as well as half time and the end of regulation.

Grab your Helga hat and join in with the other fans that display their support for the Vikings during the games.

During home games at the Metrodome, the Vikings Gjallarhorn is loudly played and sounds often after the team has a big play or scores a touchdown. In addition, a flash cannon fires upon Vikings touchdowns.

The lease for the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome expires for the Vikings in 2011. There has been a move to have a new stadium built in the same site, using existing stadium infrastructure to keep costs down. There is a desire to use “green” technology in the new construction.

It is believed that building a new home for the Vikings will dramatically improve the fan experience at the games.

The current stadium has a seating capacity of 64,121.

Driving directions to the stadium: From the East (St. Paul, Eau Claire)

The zoo is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

There are 445 species at the zoo and 2,449 animals. Learn all about the animals at the Minnesota Zoo! Explore the Zoo’s Minnesota Trail, Northern Trail, Tropics Trail, Discovery Bay, and the new Wells Fargo Family Farm on a virtual tour; then plan to come and spend the day with them.

Metronic Trail includes exciting exhibits for raccoons, coyotes and gray wolves, together with long-time residents like beaver, otter, puma and lynx. Smaller Minnesota favorites, like turtles, frogs and salamanders, are featured in the exhibit’s “trailhead,” a warm and welcoming lodge. Along the Trail, guests experience a variety of Minnesota landscapes, ranging from views into a beaver pond, a walk alongside a northern forest glade and a bird-watching perch in the treetops.

The Northern Trail showcases the cold, long winters of Minnesota with Amur tigers frolic in the snow or in their moat, depending on the season. Mexican wolves, woodland caribou and the stately moose display their ingenious adaptations for survival. A walk along the 3/4-mile trail provides the opportunity to enjoy the seasons, or, view the entire trail in climate-controlled comfort from the Monorail.

Tropics Trail has the world of the rain forest where lush, green foliage and beautiful orchids envelop guests along a winding path. Playful lemurs, inquisitive gibbons and agile tree kangaroos are just a few of the animals waiting to be discovered at each turn.

Discover Bay is awesome! Over 1.1 million gallons of water provide a home for sharks, rays and other marine life. Guests can actually touch sharks, sea stars, and sea anemones in an interactive estuary and tide pool. The Atlantic bottlenose dolphins put on quite a show—literally! Learn about dolphins’ natural behaviors during the Digital River Dolphin Show held daily in our 800-seat Dolphin Stadium.

The objective of the Wells Fargo Family Farm is to create a place for Minnesota Zoo visitors to become part of a community of people, plants and animals striving to maintain balance with nature.

The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in1972, and part of the Minnesota Historical Society’s historic site program in 1969.

The present structure is Minnesota’s third state capitol building. The first two buildings were located in downtown St. Paul on a city block bordered by Wabasha, Exchange, Cedar and 10th Street. The first capitol was destroyed by fire. The second was too small and poorly constructed.

The building opened in 1905 and has been in use every day since that time. Almost one hundred items were placed in the granite cornerstone of the new capitol building in 1898.

The steps and ground floor exterior stone of the capitol is St. Cloud Granite and the upper stories and dome is made of white Georgia marble.

The large dome consists of three structures: an inner decorative dome, seen from the rotunda, a steel and brick cone, and the outer self-supporting marble dome.

The oldest district in Minneapolis has a great deal to offer from historical sites to the hip cafe’s and theater. Walking along the river on the paved walkways will allow you to dream of how things used to be and how things will be in the future. You will enjoy this change of pace setting, whether it is by taking a horse drawn carriage ride or having lunch at one of the restaurants. Perhaps you want to look over the historical homes and sites of the area, it is all available to you at the Riverfront District.

Here are some ideas for you to see while you are in the area.

The Ard Godfrey house, located in Chute Square, is the oldest surviving frame home in the Twin Cities. Built in 1849, the Greek Revival house was the residence for the Ard Godfrey family. A Maine millwright, he helped build the first dam and sawmills to take advantage of the waterpower of St. Anthony Falls. He was also the first postmaster of the Village of St. Anthony.

Originally built at Main St. and 2nd Ave. SE, the house was moved several times before arriving in Chute Square Park in 1907.

Private tours of the house may be arranged year round through The Woman’s Club of Minneapolis 612-813-5300.

Take the time to explore the many wonderful bridges in the District. Minneapolis has more bridges across the Mississippi River than any other river community, and those bridges represent a fascinating variety of engineering types and materials.

The plaza walkway of the new Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis that has five bronze interpretive exhibits that trace the history of the Mississippi riverfront.

Mill Ruins Park is located on the west bank of the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis and is adjacent to St. Anthony Falls and the Stone Arch Bridge. It features the historic mill ruins, biking and walking paths, landscaping, raised catwalks, interpretive signs to provide information and guide visitors as they explore the river, and spectacular views of the falls and the Stone Arch Bridge.

On St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail visitors will find plenty of places to stop. Historic streets and buildings now house shops, cafes, and galleries for visitors to explore.

Back to the 50’s Weekend – St. Paul, Minnesota

This annual event put on by the Minnesota Street Rod Assocation hosts more than 10,000 street rods, customs, classics, and restored vehicles, all dating from 64 and earlier.

This is a whole weekend full of musi, fun and cars! With over 13,000 members the club just continues to grow and bring in more and more cars that have been painstakingly put in wonderful condition for the shows the club puts on. The 50’s weekend gives everyone a chance to show their cars off in the largest arena possible, the Minnesota State Fairgrounds!

The Back to the 50’s show will have over 11,000 vehicles and be viewed by over 100,000 people! It is rhe second largest show of it’s type in the world, exceeded only by the NSRA Street Rod Nationals.

Vendors of both food and other items are available both inside and outside during the show. Just think, you can munch on a whole array of different foods while you walk around looking at some of the most fantastic cars you have ever seen. Talk to the owners, find out the history of their interest, where they got started, why they do what they do, how to find the right car for you and all kinds of different things. They would be happy to visit with you and tell you their stories!

In an era where street rod builders are television celebrities and car owners fret about where to "debut" their six-figure, pro-built rides,(you’ve seen these shows on TV and heard the bragging rights of many) Back to the ’50s is an unpretentious, bring-what-ya-got gathering. The informal vibe is probably rooted in the way the Minnesota Street Rod Association runs the event. There are no awards or trophies, which takes away the air competition and makes things comfortable for those who own less-than-perfect machines. And by opening the door to all ‘64-and-earlier vehicles long ago, the MSRA has ensured a good mix of rods, customs, classics, trucks, and even a few vintage imports, most of which are believe it or not they are actually driven to the show!

Oh, and don’t forget about the food! You can walk around the grounds eating a wide variety of items, many of them served on a stick so you can just carry them with you!

It is held at the state fairgrounds, adjoining the St Paul campus of the University of Minnesota.
It typically runs for twelve days, running from late August into early September with the last day being Labor Day.

Bring you family; show them all there is to see at the fair. Be sure to take them through the livestock barns, especially those that are from the city, they probably have no idea where milk comes from or may ask you if it is true that brown cows give chocolate milk. Can’t blame them, they don’t know so educate them at the fair!

Enter your items in the fair yourself. Maybe you are a photographer, there is a class for that, or maybe you bake fabulous bread, rolls, pies or cakes, enter them. What if you make the best pickles in the whole world? Well, enter them! It’s fun, it’s easy and you are most welcome to participate.

Main Street</st1:address></st1:street> in Anoka. Established in 1857, the cemetery contains many of the towns’ first citizens, including former Anoka mayor and Civil War veteran Marcus Q. Butterfield. His 4-foot-tall marble gravestone stands a few feet from the eroding dirt road that allows access to the cemetery from <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">W. Main Street</st1:address></st1:street>.

Butterfield died in 1886, and his gravestone is one of several from that time period. Some are obelisks; others are small stones in the ground. Some are located beneath trees; others have been disturbed by roots. Many are worn and unreadable.

The Monuments to Life tour focuses on history, where the tour guide explains the meaning of gravestone carvings to better understand the deceased’s life.

All through the tour the meanings of the gravestones are discussed, some have historical documents to verify the meaning of the stone chosen, others are left the the imagination of the group taking the tour.

There are costumed actors, speaking in first person provide a sense of theater and drama to the tour. Occassionally there is a diary or other material that was left by the deceased that will be read by one of the actors.

Other related topics covered include a history of funeral and mourning customs and how to best preserve loved ones’ gravestones.

Oakwood Cemetery is the final resting place for many of Anoka’s most prominent and founding citizens. Among the most notable is T.P. Giddings, who died in 1954. One of the city’s most eccentric characters, Giddings lived on the west bank of the Rum River, just south of <st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Main Street</st1:address></st1:street>. The landmark stone house that sits just down river from the Main Street Bridge was one of three similar structures Giddings built in the area. The mischievous Giddings, when asked by a stranger in the 1920s what the structures were for, told the man that they were watchtowers to guard against Indian attacks. The stranger took the false tale back east and told the newspapers about Anoka, Minnesota under threat of attack by Indians (a shocking story in the modern 1920s!). The story took on a life of its own, Giddings tried to correct the record by telling his story to the Anoka County Historical Society, but rumors and tall tales about the purpose and origin of the stone house continue today.

You can take all three tours and learn a great deal of Anoka history for just $20 or you can go to the tour of just one cemetery for $8.

As the Halloween Capital of the World Anoka will provide you with a lifetime of memories of the weird, spooky and fun.

If your child has ever expressed an interest in theater arts and you live in Minneapolis, you have the perfect opportunity to let them explore that interest. The Children’s Theater Company (CTC) can be found at 2400 Third Avenue South in Minneapolis. The Company was founded in 1965 and has become a premier children’s theater and cultural entertainment opportunity for area residents. They have received a number of prestigious awards including the National Governor’s Association Award and the 2003 Regional Theater Tony Award.

The Company offers theater arts training in acting, dance, singing and other types of theater arts to kids ages 4-18. Each year, over 800 young people get the opportunity to perform, and over 1200 area kids get the chance to take advantage of one of the many classes CTC offers. They present at least six productions each season, with plays for everyone from teens to pre-schoolers and their parents and everyone in between. Their productions offer something for everyone in the surrounding community.

The goals of the CTC theater arts training include igniting the imagination and creative processes of children, enabling their ability to grow both personally and artistically, empowering them to reach their personal creative potential, and build confidence. They also encourage them to work as a group and interact with others. They teach them how to use their bodies and their voices to say something, to entertain, and to build themselves as people and artists. This is why the CTC offers a variety of programs to address the needs of their young people and their entire community.

The CTC offers classes for home school students. They are designed to fit in with the schedules of these students and also to fit in with their educational needs. For Girl Scout troops, the CTC offers the opportunity to play theater games, take part in a number of classes and workshops, and earn brownie or scout patches. For their professional productions, they offer study guides that allow those viewing the play to have a great understanding and enjoyment of the production. The CTC engages with the community in so many different ways and is an asset to Minneapolis.

During the summer months, CTC offers half and full day camps for kids. These seasonal classes are a great way to introduce your child to the world of theater. Tuition fees vary according to the program and must be paid for at registration or payment arrangements can be made. Some need based scholarships are available and you can get an application for financial assistance. The CTC also offers residencies and workshops of varying lengths and types from which to choose.

The CTC offers chances to challenge and enchant children of all ages and backgrounds. For more information about the Children’s Theater Company, you can call 612-874-0500. If you want more information about the current productions or to purchase tickets to one of the shows, call 612-874-0400.

The Minnesota History Center is the ideal place to learn about Minnesota’s past through museum exhibits featuring large-scale objects, hands-on experiences and multimedia presentations. A vast collection of books, pamphlets, etc., on the subject of the state’s past history can be accessed in the History Center’s comprehensive library. Extensive data that can help in tracing Minnesota family backgrounds or dwellings is available in the library as well.

Of considerable interest to visitors at the Center is an exhibit focusing on a single existing house in the so-called “Railroad Island” neighborhood on St. Paul’s East Side. The exhibit opens a “window” into the daily lives of people of the past. Stories are brought to life through the vivid use of voices, photographs and multimedia imagery.

Minnesota A to Z is an exhibit organized around the alphabet, each with a different theme. For example, imagine gliding across the smooth waters of a tranquil Minnesota lake in the long ago past in a Native-American built birch-bark canoe at “C” or press a button and hear the song of a loon at “L.” “J” for journey is for the wagon used by Dave Kunst of Waseca, the first man to circle the globe on foot.

One of the many popular revolving exhibits is one called “Play Ball” which highlights baseball artifacts pertaining to a collection of winning seasons in Minnesota professional baseball from the 1932 Minneapolis Millers to the 1991 Twins. Among the artifacts on display are:

The glove worn by Minnesota pitcher Jeff Reardon in game 7 of the World Series.

A Junior World Series trophy won by the 1955 Minneapolis Millers in their last season at Nicollet Park.

Matching uniforms worn by two generations of Killebrews during a father and son game at Metropolitan Stadium.

Throughout the year the History Center’s Museum Theatre offers special plays and performances that highlight Minnesota’s past. “Tales From the Territory” is one such play that takes place during the turbulent times that unfolded some century-and-a-half before Minnesota’s statehood.

An annual special exhibit that has proven highly popular with visitors is the Showcasing of Ojibwe artists and a silent auction of their works. Ojibwe artists of all ages are provided a venue to show their artwork. All proceeds of the auction goes to the artist with the exception of a small donation for art programming at the Center. The exhibit can be seen from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.

Hours: Wednesday thru Saturday and Monday : 10am to 5pm – noon to 5pm Sunday

Admission: $7 – adults $6 – seniors and college students $4 – children 6 to 17 – under 6 free

The Minnesota History Center is located at the junction of I-35 E. and I-94, on the western edge of downtown St. Paul, at the corner of Kellogg and John Ireland boulevards.

Telephone: 651-296-6126 or toll free 800-657-3773

Admission: $8-adults $6- seniors and college students $4-children 6 to 17 under 6 free

Minneapolis Institute of Arts – Minneapolis, Minnesota

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA) has a collection of over 100,000 objects. These cover many different cultures and span over 5000 years of history. Located at 2400 Third Avenue South in Minneapolis, Minnesota, it is a fantastic museum that allows visitors to enjoy a wide range of art and exhibits. The museum has been a part of Minneapolis history for a long time. It began as the brainchild of just twenty-five citizens in 1883 that were dedicated to their cause of bringing art into their community. The attractive neoclassical building that houses the Minneapolis Institute of Arts opened for the first time in 1915. Two wings have been added onto the museum since that time, one in 1974, which was designed by Kenzo Tange, and another in 2006 by Michael Graves.

The permanent collections at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts include African, Oceanic and Native American Art; Ancient Art; Architecture, Design, Decorative Arts, Crafts, and Sculpture; Asian Art; Paintings and Modern Sculpture; Photographs; Prints and Drawings; Textiles and a unique Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program that supports the art of artists who live in the state of Minnesota.

The MIA also has exhibits that change regularly and offer visitors a chance to experience many other types of art. For instance, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts has featured photography detailing the San Francisco psychedelic scene, and a decorative and useful arts exhibit that features items used and made between 1640 and 1860 in America. Their website offers information about current and upcoming exhibits that will be showcased in one of the museum’s many galleries.

The museum offers a wide range of events for all ages. Youth programs include family days that feature music and dance, artist demonstrations, and hands on art activities. For older museum patrons, there is a wonderful lecture series, adult classes, and live Sunday morning concerts from area musicians.

The museum has a gift shop where visitors can purchase jewelry, post cards and other exceptional gifts. The library has a number of books to interest anyone, and the restaurant and café are available for your dining convenience. Audio tours and guided tours are also available. In addition, there are interactive learning stations that teach visitors about African art and Modernist design and allow them to create virtual embroidery, etc. For those that wish to view photos and prints that are currently not on display, the MIA offers study rooms that can be used by appointment.

Admission to the museum is free, thanks to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts members and other supporters of the museum. However, some exhibits occasionally charge for admission. The hours for the museum are from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On Thursdays, the museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays. It is also closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and July 4th. For more information call 1-888-642-2787.

Alexis Bailly Vineyard – Hastings, Minnesota

Since 1978, Alexis Bailly Vineyard has strived to produce quality tasting wine for connoisseurs around the globe. Located in Hastings, Minnesota, this family run vineyard only uses Minnesotan grown grapes in all of their wines. Known for its harsh winters, the state of Minnesota is not the ideal climate for growing wine grapes. Despite this challenge, the Bailly family has continuously managed to produce a successful grape crop year after year.

The goal of creating a vineyard based in Minnesota was the dream of former attorney David Bailly. In 1973, Mr. Bailly followed his dream and purchased a twenty acre plot of land. With limited experience in winemaking, he took on the task of growing his own grapes for wine production. Due to the frigid winter temperatures, yielding a successful grape crop required extra care and attention.

After five years of hard work, the Bailly family was finally able to open their business to the public. Since then, Alexis Bailly Vineyard has received several prestigious award recognitions. Although David Bailly passed away in 1990, the business is still run by the Bailly family. Today David’s daughter, Nan, carries on the Minnesota winemaking tradition started by her father.

Currently the vineyard offers a number of palate pleasing wines for customers to choose from including: Country White, Hastings Reserve, Frontenac, Country Red, Seyval Blanc, Country Rose, Rastafia, Voyageur, and ISIS. Guests at the vineyard can also learn about what foods to serve with each type of wine.

Visitors can schedule a trip of the winery from May through the end of December. Although there is no formal tour available, the winery is always staffed with helpful employees to answer questions or guide you on your tour.

For a fee of $2 to $5 per person, guests can participate in a wine tasting event which allows you to sample the entire wine selection offered for sale. After the event, choose a bottle of your favorite wine or purchase an assortment of different wines as gifts. Special events are offered throughout the year including an open house in both the spring and fall season. To stay up to date on wine tasting events, ask to be included on the Alexis Bailly Vineyard’s mailing list. Updates can be sent to customers via email or postal mail.

For customers that can’t make a trip to the winery, Alexis Bailly Vineyard wines are available at numerous retail and liquor stores around the state. In addition, customers can phone in their order requests by phone. The winery ships to most states around the country with the exception of Pennsylvania, Maine, and Utah.

Winery Hours:

Winter Holiday Season: Saturdays only (Thanksgiving thru Christmas) – 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Regular Season: Friday, Saturday, & Sunday (May until Thanksgiving) – 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The winery is closed from Christmas until the 1st of May. However, customers can still make purchases during this time, simply call ahead to inform the staff before your visit.

Conveniently located beneath the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota, Underwater Adventures Aquarium lets you view sea creatures up close while traveling through a specially designed tunnel. The tunnel automatically guides you on your underwater journey via a moving walkway. Guests at the aquarium may feel like they’re swimming right along with the animals.

After a major reconstruction project in 2000, the aquarium now boasts well over four-thousand different types of sea life for guests to enjoy. Built in 1996, this attraction was originally referred to as the Underwater World. Today the aquarium has many extra features in addition to the underwater tunnel.

At Starfish Beach, visitors can experience the thrill of touching a live shark or stingray. There are two separate petting pools at the beach, one to house the sharks and the other which holds the many cow-nose stingrays on display. For those who love excitement, Starfish Beach offers a virtual submarine ride that plunges you to the bottom of the sea.

Underwater Adventures Aquarium also has an outdoor area where tourists get the opportunity to hike along a forest path. Along the way guests can view many types of wildlife including: toads, freshwater stingrays, trout, and a number of different turtles and tortoises.
