The Cannon Valley Trail is 19.7 miles long funning through the diverse and spectacular scenery on a former Chicago Great Western Railroad line connecting the cities of Cannon Falls, Welch, Red Wing in beautiful southeaster Minnesota. The trail runs along the Cannon River which enables you to see glimpses and panoramas of the valley as you desend the 115 feet from Cannon Falls to Red Wing.

The trail is open year round for bicycling, in-line skating, skateboarding, hiking and walking, and similar wheeled recreations devices. Trail users age 18 or older must have a valid Wheel Pass when using the trail from April 1 – Novermber 1. During the snow season, cross-country skiing is one of the activities along the trail. A Great Minnesota Ski Pass is required to cross-country ski on the Cannon Valley Trail.

There are no pets allows on Cannon Valley Trail, even those in baskets and trailers, so leave them at home. The Trail includes natural and cultural resources, scenic view sheds, rest areas, hiking, biking, inline skating and cross country skiing.

When the railline was going to be abandoned citizens decided it would make a great trail so they worked together to build and maintain the trail for all those that enjoy the Minnesota outdoors. The trail was dedicated in 1986 and the asphalt surfacing was completed in 1992.

Located in this small community is the Root River Trail which is a 60 mile paved bicycle trail and one of the earliest and most successful rails to trails projects anyplace. Riding this trail will take you through the rolling hills of southeastern Minnesota with views of pristine fields, picture book farms, verdant valleys and rocky bluffs. To spend a day or a couple of days on this trail will refresh your love for the outdoors and a great appreciation for southeastern Minnesota!

The ride will take you to the communities of Harmony, Preston, Fountain, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford and Houston.

Harmony is the southern terminus of the Harmony-Preston Valley Trail System. It sits just two miles north of the Minnesota-Iowa border and is the home to the Niagra Cave.

Preston is the county seat of Fillmore County. The Harmony-Preston Valley trail passes through Preston connecting Harmony to the south with the Root River Valley Trail to the north. There is a large park area where bikers can stop off for a bit, get something to eat in town or just relax for a bit.

Fountain is the western terminus fo the Root River Trail System. Situated on the top of a gentle rise it will give you a beautiful view of the surrounding area.

The community of Lanesboro is not only the starting place for the trail but also home to Buffalo Bill Cody, a resident in the mid 1800′s. Along with the trail you may enjoy a break while you do some canoeing, kayaking, fishing or hiking in this community area.

Whalan may have only 63 residents but it welcomes the bikers with some of the best homemade pie anyplace and if you are in the area on the third Saturday of May you will be able to see the famous “Stand Still Parade.”

Peterson is a village with great views for you to enjoy. The trail intersects the town’s main street which makes it a perfect place to grab something to eat at one of the restaurants.

Rushford has the trail running adjacent to the towns historical museum where you will be able to see a one room schoolhouse. Here, if you are Norwegian, you will find the wonderful Lefse made right here in the Lefse factory! Now, you don’t HAVE to be Norwegian to love Lefse but it is a Norwegian delicacy.

Houston is the eastern terminus of the Root River Trail System. The views between Rushford and Houston will take your breath away. The route is more hilly in places than the rest of the ride.

Enter the world of the agricultural life of the Gilfillan family when you visit the estate just outside of Redwood Falls and Morgan, Minnesota. The estate was donated to the Redwood County Historical Society so it would be maintained for the pleasure and education of future generations.

The estate was started by Charles Duncan Gilfillan who had been born in New York in 1831 following the immigration to the United States from Scotland by his parents. His parents died when he was just 11 years old but he went on to receive his education and became a teacher. He taught in Missouri for awhile and then moved on to Minnesota. He left teaching and went into law and partnered with his brother, James, in 1857. His life was to continue to be busy and helpful, he was instrumental in establishing a safe and sufficient water supply for the city of St. Paul. He had four children with his second wife.

In 1882 he purchased 13,000 acres of land near Redwood Falls. Here he built a beautiful home and offices along iwth a grain elevator, stockyard and tenant homes later. At that time in his life he raised livestock for export to Great Britain.

When Charles died his son, Charles Oswin, succeeded him as owner of Gilfillan. Prior to moving to Gilfillan he managed the Gilfillan Block in St. Paul. In honor of his father, CO built the Morgan Library and then followed it up by giving 160 acres to help support and maintain the building.

When you visit the site you will be able to see a wonderful collection of antique farm machinery. The house is furnished as it was in the days the family lived there so the historical significance of the time is preserved.

Also at the estate is the annual event called Farmfest. This is the largest outdoor agricultural event in the State. There are normally over 40,000 attendees that come to view the latest products from over 550 manufacturers and attend the educational forums as well as participate in the field demonstration. In the pavilion at Farmfest, volunteers serve their popular ice cream and 1919 root beer floats. They will also serve hamburgers, bratwursts, potato salad, sauerkraut and beans.

Farmfest is a unique event in that there are so many people working to make it just a bit different and more fun than some like events. They make the ice cream with ice cut from a nearby lake and make extra to serve at other events throughout the year. There is old time music played near the pavilion where people gather to visit and enjoy the experience.

There are tours of the estate and farm machinery exhibit which costs $5 or just pay the $3 to see the house alone. There are two floor in the house and you are welcome to tour at your own pace. There are volunteers stationed around the house to answer any questions you may have.

In addition to the grand house, the summer kitchen and the 1930′s-era Heritage House reveal more stories of life in earlier times. Many of the outbuildings now house countless displays of antiques – from small household items and tools to early farm equipment.

The average tour time is 45 minutes.

Enter the estate through the drive which is lined with trees and see the beautiful flower gardens of the Estate. Other times of the year, the estate is the site of weddings, reunions, the local Relay for Life and a fall festival. From Thanksgiving to the New Year, it is decorated with Christmas lights. The grounds has a camp site. The estate is open for tours by appointment from May through September.

The Gilfillan Estate is located on Hwy.67 between Morgan and Redwood Falls.

Hormel Nature Center – Austin, Minnesota

The JC Hormel Nature Center was established in 1971 with 507 acres of beautiful land within the city limits of Austin. There are restored and remnant prairie, hardwood forests, wetland and meandering streams just waiting for you to come out and enjoy the beauty that Minnesota can offer. There are 10 miles of hiking trails for you to experience and see deer, mink, raccoons, salamanders, birds and other wildlife that will be such a joy to witness on your hike. In fact, the deer are so thick that there are occasionally deer hunts to reduce the population to keep those surviving healthy instead of sickly and starving.

Trails are open from 6 AM to 10 PM seven days a week with no fees. The Interpretive (visitor) Center is open from 9 AM to 12 PM and then from 1 PM to 5 PM.

Don’t bring your pets on the hikes since they are not allowed. Neither can you use the trails for biking since they are just hiking trails. There are some rules that apply when using the trails, there is no smoking allowed, no alcohol, collecting of plants or animals, no camping, fires or picnicking on the trails or the grounds.

There are hands-on structured environmental educational programs for all ages although the main focus is on grades K – 6.

The Visitor Center has exhibits that show live animals, has touch tables, mounted animals, nature games and a preschool play area as well as a nature library for your enjoyment.

The Jay C. Hormel Nature Center will take injured birds of prey, hawks, owls, or eagles. They work with the vet to make sure the birds are healthy and then, if need be, they are transferred to the Raptor Center in St. Paul. Other injured birds or orphaned mammals will be helped by the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Roseville (651-486-9453).

During the summer you can take your children to the Center and let them experience things like pond scooping, insect or butterfly netting and use the trails to take a hike with your child. It will build memories that will last a lifetime for both of you.

There is the Ruby Rupner Auditorium that can be rented for special events. They also have cabins to rent. These were not damaged in the tornado that ripped through the area in 2010.

One RoomSchool (RidgeSchool) – Amboy, Minnesota

There is history in this small town in southern Minnesota and the surrounding area that will bring back memories for those that take the time to visit. For instance, there is the one room school that taught kids west of Amboy for many year, in fact, up until the 50’s it was still going strong.

The school was the site of a whole social and educational experience for the kids that attended there, under many teachers but the most notable was Dorothy Fraze. She not only taught but directed plays and got involved encouraging the kids to be the best they could be.

The school was built in 1881 for $337.86. The builder of the school (who is no longer known) made sure the quality was good, since the building was moved into Amboy in 2006 to be added to the charming downtown area as a museum for residents and visitors to enjoy. The school was painted before it was moved to a location 1 block off Main Street. The old school had to be purchased from the owners of the land it was located on in the country but Mitch and Margo (Johnson) Oatmen sold it to the city for $1.

During the early years the school was used every other Sunday as a place for the First Presbyterian Church to hold its services.

The Treasurer’s ledger for 1879 has been located to show the cost of doing business as a one room school in this time. The cost of operating the school for the year 1880 was $193. 84 The teacher’s wages for 1880 was $154.00 and the bills for wood and school supplies were $17.70. A pail was purchased for $ .25 and crayons where purchased for $ .20, The school was repaired for another $13. 00.

The names of some of the early teachers were Frank White; Annie Dobie; George Conrad; Jennie White; Julia Malmin; Mary Reynolds; J W Heritage; Melvina Wilde; Nriss Louis and of course, Dorothy Fraze.

The original cost for building constructed in 1881 and finished in 1882 was $337.86

Inside the school are some of the original desks and it has the same bell in the tower that rang for years to summon the kids to class. There are pictures of the students from the school’s “glory days” hung beside the pictures of the restoration for those that want to see if they can find themselves. Some of the kids that attended the school were Dennis Starkweather, Dough Startweather, Jim Johnson, Donna Smothers, Dwayne and Ray Smothers, Norman Glaubitz, Jim, Bob and Nita Irvine,Charlotte Curry, Dorthy and Helen Howieson, Laura Louks, Kathy Hall, Joan & Helen Stenberg, Harland Haroldson, Lyle Johnson, Lyle Curry, Durwood Irvine, Woodrow Irvine, Pete Dirkx, Cecil Dickey, Leo Pederson, Gordon Johnson and Russ Johnson.

If you attended the school or have memories of going to the school for one of the Christmas plays or other activities, please post it on our site so we can share them with the readers.

Location: 1 Block south of Main Street, Amboy, Minnesota

If you are interested in attending the Ridge School Program please contact Joan Morrison at 507-674-3358 or drop her an email at jmglaub@hickorytech.net

    * Gibson Barbershop – the place to get shaves, haircuts, baths, and the news that wasn’t in the paper.
    * Dakota City Free Press – produces a newspaper using a linotype and 1900-era presses.

This area of Minnesota has been settled by the Amish, starting around 1974 the "older order" of the Amish began moving into the area and now have approximately 100 families. The Amish are a deeply religious, private people who have been able to resist the ways of modern society. This are hosts 7 one room schools and 3 districts.

As you drive through the area of rolling hills be sure to keep your eyes open for the buggies and wagons used for transportation by the Amish. You may see them tied up to hitching posts in town or see the farmers working in the fields with their team of horses. You may see the children walking home from school or out doing chores or playing. Their clothing may seem different to you, but they are happy with their lives and wish only to be respected, as they respect your privacy.

Enjoy the experience, see the shops where the Amish sell their goods, watch the woodworkers make fabulous furniture, taste their wonderful breads and pies and leave the area knowing that there truly are places where simplicity is the way of life.

SMSU’s planetarium houses a Spitz 512 star projector system with a 30-foot dome. The Spitz 512 planetarium projector, located at the center of the theater, is the heart of the planetarium and can accurately simulate the night sky as seen from anywhere on Earth thousands of years in the past OR future. When the room lights are darkened, the dome is transformed into an amazingly realistic simulation of the starry sky. The Spitz 512 is capable of projecting the sun, moon, the 5 naked-eye planets, and about 4,000 stars on the domed ceiling with accuracy in brightness and color. The result is a simulation of the nighttime sky that can be seen day or night — cloudy or clear.

There is so much to see and do at the planetarium that you will want to go back time after time for new adventures.

There are fireworks, of course, but there is so much more to do for the day then sit around and wait for it to get dark enough for the fireworks display! There is the parade at 10 AM which will thrill everyone. Lots of floats, bands and candy tossed to the kids (regardless of their age). Following the parade there is the Art Fair in the Square where you will be able to find those unique and inviting paintings that you just have to have for your home or for gifts for that special someone.

At noon you can enjoy the picnic, music, pony rides, kiddies train and food vendors. Now, if you do each of those things your day is going to be pretty full so you may have time to visit with friends, check into your hotel and get ready for a great fireworks show at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds at 10 PM.

Annual Great Dakota Gathering and Homecoming – Winona, Minnesota

This annual event is to bring honor to the Dakota tribe who had lived on this land prior to the white man. There will be dancing and events such as the Moccasin Game…

History of the Moccasin Game
The moccasin game may have originated in the late 1700’s or very early 1800’s, from a surprise encounter between two hunter warriors from two tribes who spoke different language and had different traditions and culture.

These two tribes would at times have disputes over territorial and hunting rights, otherwise they coexisted comfortably. On one occasion when the two tribes were on a fall hunt to have a supply of meat for the winter, two hunter warriors of one of the tribes spotted a very large herd of elk in a semi-forest, bushy area, one of the hunter warriors started back for the main camp to bring as many hunters that were available. The other hunter warrior followed the elk, marking the trail as he went being very careful not to spook the elk out of the territory. At the same time two hunter warriors of the other tribe spotted the same herd of elk and one of them also went back to his camp to bring as many hunters as possible.

The two hunter warriors who were trailing the herd of elk unknowingly were in the same vicinity and both came out of the brush, into a small clearing. The encounter was a complete surprise, which normally would bring on actions that would lead to terrible consequences for either one or both.

The two hunter warriors were mindful of their mission and realized the death of one or the other or both would mean the denial of a large supply of meat for their tribe.

One of the hunters suggested that each put four moccasins in a row in front of them, hide an object under one of the moccasins; the other would find a stick or any such object to strike the moccasin that he thinks the object was hidden under.

They both agreed they would take all their arrows and put them together at one end of the row of four moccasins and at the other end of the moccasins they would put their knives, hatchets and other things they valued. Whoever won all the combined arrows would be the victor and would claim the arrows, the knives, the hatchets, the elk or anything else he demanded, even the other warrior’s life. But after playing this game for a long time, the two warrior hunters became friends and agreed that this was the away they should settle future disputes.

These were the times when warrior hunters on a long journey carried extra moccasins to replace the ones worn out. This story of the origin of the moccasin game was told by a Mdewakanta Dakota Elder by the name of Eli Taylor from Sioux Valley, Manitoba, Canada who passed away on January 10, 1999 at the age of 92.

There will be celebrations, singing, drumming, dancing and feasting as well as demonstrations of arts and crafts. There will be stories of the history of the Dakota tribe.

The Celebration is held at Unity Park, East Lake Winona, Winona, Minnesota annyally.

There is a $5 admission.

No alcohol, drugs or firearms are allowed on the grounds.

Bockfest – New Ulm, Minnesota

Bockfest is for the true beer lovers out there. It is held, usually, in February or March at the Schells Brewery grounds.

The Shell Brewery was built on the bluffs over looking the beauty of the area in 1860. The brewery has expanded over the years and the carriage house has been converted into a museum for memorabilia of the brewery.

In the cold of winter the brewery throws a party for approximately 3,000 beer lovers on their grounds.

One of the festive rituals of Bock Fest is the poking of the beer with a red-hot iron, laid among fiery logs until glowing hot.

The bock beer is caramelized by a plunge with a hot iron poker, and can be a warming, even restorative beverage as the snow begins to swirl around you.

Bock is traditionally brewed in the fall at the end of the growing season and stored ("lagered") all winter to be enjoyed in the spring at the beginning of the brew season. Bock is a strong full-bodied lager made with lots of malt. Contrary to urban legend, bock is not brewed from the "dregs" left from the cleaning of the fermentation barrels in the spring.

After the bock fest ends at 4:30 some of those in attendance head for the local taverns to continue on with the party. Of course, there is fabulous food (German suggested) to enjoy along with the beer.

They carry on the tradition of original, live theater and locally produced films as they have done since the beginning.
The theatre has produced two feature length films, one, "Greta’s Song" is an award winning drama concerning domestic abuse. The other titled "Eldon Miller’s Ghost" looks at the consequences of the Vietnam War on a mid-western family. Actors and location were both from the Winona area.

There is also music at the theatre since the acoustics inside the historic 1907 Masonic theatre are excellent entertainers, particularly the contemporary blues and folk acts, love to come and entertain in this intimate environment.

The Apple Festival was founded in La Crescent in 1949 to promote the community and the apple industry. The three day Applefest weekend is a culmination of a year planning to make sure that all of the events go on without a hitch. Come and enjoy the parade, the Kiddie parade, the carnival, of course the Apple Pie Stand, the President’s Reception and the Queen Cornation. You can continue on with the pancake breakfast, king apple parade, the craft show and entertainment in the King Apple (which would translate into BEER) tent and the Johnny Appleseed (Family) tent.

That is a great deal to pack into one weekend, but you will be so glad you visited, ate great pie, watched a real parade and enjoyed the activities with everyone else.

The Applefest is ALWAYS held on the 3rd full weekend in Spetember. (A full weekend means both Saturday and Sunday occur in September.)

Root River Segment Bike Trails – Preston, Minnesota

The Root River State Trail is a 42 mile long multiple use trail through the quaint and picturesque rural communities of Fountain, Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford and Houston.

This asphalt trail was mainly constructed upon an abandoned railroad grade which is generally level and wheelchair accessible. Newly paved in 1999, the eastern segment between Money Creek Woods and Houston is relatively more challenging than the western segment with a rather steep, half-mile segment that may not be suitable for all users.

Bicycling, in-line skating, and hiking are the main summer uses of the trail. Cross country skiing is popular in the winter. The Fillmore and Houston county Grants-in-Aid (GIA) trail system, which provides many miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the area, intersects briefly with the Root River State Trail.

The Root River State Trail provides outstanding views of the soaring limestone bluffs of the Root River Valley. Wildlife is abundant and sightings of wild turkey, deer, hawks and turkey vultures are common. Rattlesnakes, a state threatened and protected species, are occasionally found on rock outcrops, along the river bottoms, or sunning themselves on the trail. They should be left alone.

Historical buildings and rural communities along the trail provide sites of interest to trail users. They also provide many services. Campgrounds, bed and breakfast inns, restaurants, museums, outfitters and unique stores are found in many of the trail towns.
