Northern Lights Model Railroad Assoc. & Museum – East Grand Forks, Minnesota
If you are a fan of the model railroads and would enjoy seeing a top rate display then you really want to visit the Northern Lights Model Railroad Association & Museum. Here you will be able to see Lionel and HO scale model trains in a 32 foot by 17 foot room. This building also has a telegraph office with a bay window and a public viewing hall.
Outside you will find 300 ft of standard gage railroad track with a restored Great Northern Railway caboose for you to see.
An operating block signal and motor car house are located just east of the building.
Also on display is a Fairmont W60 series A Derrick Car which has been restored and is fully functional. The derrick could handle loads of up to 3,000 pounds with a boom that reaches up to seven feet from the center of the track. The deck provides space for hauling timbers or other loads, as well as a working platform when the derrick is at a job site. The boom swings a full 360 degrees with a two-speed hoist.
The Casey Holt Junction has something for every age, from the model trains to the “little tyke” train to give the little ones a ride on the train, they love it!
Two other pieces that are on display are the Push Car and the Gang car. The Gang Car usually held four member of the maintenance or what was called a Way crew.
The layout track is all DCC or computer controlled with a double dog bone track plan and no ‘duck-unders’. The layout has the capacity to allow 99 engineers to operate at one time independent of one another. A public viewing hall is located on the North side of the building.
