The Chippewa County Historical Society of Montevideo has created a space for you to step back in time and visit a 23-building museum complex.  Here you will be able to experience what life was like before all the modern conveniences of today.  You will be able to visit a church, school, dress shop, law office, print shop, fire department, post office and also the historical homes in the park.

Walking through this area you will learn about the hardships and joys that the citizens of the era experienced.  Visualize yourself being a resident of this community, what you would have to live without and what you would have to learn to be able to survive and live in comfort.

The Historical Society has done an admirable job in keeping history alive in this delightful place.  Visit it the next time you are in the area, you won’t be disappointed!

Swensson House MN.jpgThe Swensson Farm Museum has 17 acres of farmstead including a fabulous timer-frame barn for you to visit.  There is also a grist mill (or what remains of it) and hand cut granite monuments.  The 22 room brick farm house is situated on a foundation of local granite.  The home is included on the National Register of Historic Places.  The home has its original furnishing to add to the pleasure of the visit.

This farm gives evidence to the contributions made to Minnesota by the Scandinavian immigrants to the state.  Olof Swensson (from Norway) came to America in 1872 and built his house for himself and his wife in Montevideo.
